Custom folded metal roofing can last for 100 years or longer, with the added benefit of little or no maintenance. But the design, fabrication and installation is most critical, and is where many mistakes have been made throughout recent history. A custom metal roof is not that difficult to fabricate and install over open expanses, but where structures protrude through the roof, where moisture gets blocked and pools during its trip downhill, is where difficulties lie in any roofing situation. Towers, pilasters, chimneys and buttress intersections with the main roofing plane form complex three-dimensional corners which must junction integrally to the new metal roof.
Fabricating these junctions so they will last as long as the roof remainder is an art in itself. The complex junction pieces must be carefully patterned and folded tight, just like the panels in the open field before soldering properly. Failure in this process can render an expensive new roof useless. Also, and as equally important, care must be paid to the minimizing of individual panel size, even though increasing seaming and fabrication labor, to accommodate the need of sheet metal to expand and contract with temperature change without buckling the sheets. Many metal roofs have met an early demise because these two important considerations were overlooked. Beautiful, constantly changing color patterns can be integrated into the design of your roof at little added cost.
