Steeple Restore
Steeples are a critical part of our architectural heritage and a beautiful aspect of our country's landscape. Many have already been lost due to neglect, poor workmanship, bad design or natural disaster, and each are costly, if not impossible, to replace.
However such architectural, social and inherently inaccessible icons have received poor treatment. It is evident that reasons for this are the expensive access necessary for repair and that existing so high up, any work looks OK from below. While access fees need not be unreasonable with proper rigging technology and an athletic, skilled crew, it seems that the 'out of sight' issue is more at the core of the problem. While this might make honest economic sense for certain applications, in many respects this attitude has been carried too far, resulting in costly damage from negligence, poor workmanship or contractor dishonesty. Unlike work on a house, owing to its height, flawed work or damage to a steeple often goes unnoticed. Unfortunately, many steeples and church roofs are further complicated by expansive attic spaces that prevent leaks from being noticed until greater problems have arisen.
